GUTTMAN DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES, INC.
Great
Business Teams: Cracking the Code for Standout Performance
has just been published by John Wiley. The book is unusual in
many ways, not the least of which is its research into the
inner workings of great teams from 25 companies: naming names,
citing specifics, and extracting the "code" behind their
performance. This issue of GDSI offers readers a
five-minute glimpse into the book's content, and tells the
book's "back story" straight from author Howard M. Guttman.

GREAT BUSINESS TEAMS: THE BACK
STORY |
|
Now that Great Business Teams has been
published, this is a good time for a little reflection.
Looking back at the past 18 months of research and writing,
here's what stands out:
The Courage to
Share. We interviewed 39 executives for Great
Business Teams, and a number of them allowed us to attend
their alignments and team meetings. They were open, remarkably
honest, and self-critical. It took real courage for them to
give us the key to the meeting room, a pass to record the
action, and permission to share the results with readers.
Impressive! |

FROM GREAT CHALLENGES, GREAT
TEAMS |
|
Learning from role models is one of the best ways to
improve performance, and Great Business Teams provides
readers with many opportunities to run alongside prototypical
great leaders and teams as they handle an array of business
challenges. For example:
á It was Black Friday 2006,
when over $622 million was spent every minute by holiday
shoppers. It's a make-or-break day for retailers, Chico's
included. The challenge: There was little ka-ching, ka-ching
at Chico's cash registers, putting to the test the company's
ability to turn on a dime and redirect its marketing plan at
500 stores nationwide. |
